The Ouija Board Challenge & Investigation

This whole investigation started at a local paranormal Q&A panel. The session was completely hijacked by a discussion about Ouija boards, with the investigators from Mysteries & Legends Paranormal insisting that spirit boards provide undeniable evidence of ghosts.

When we stepped up to ask what they thought of experiments where users are blindfolded, and the board completely stops making sense. they doubled down. They claimed that the board would work just fine even with blindfolds. Naturally, we proposed to put that theory to the test. We worked together to build a fair, scientific, double-blind protocol.

A Last-Minute Cancellation & The Ouija Class

Less than 24 hours before our scheduled test date, the paranormal group canceled. They claimed they couldn't get permission to use the venue, but they never made any attempt to reschedule. Instead, they told us to go attend a local Ouija board class to try it out for ourselves.

So we did! We bought tickets, sat down, and gave it an honest effort. Every other table around us was apparently in deep conversation with spirits, but at our table? Silence. The planchette didn't budge an inch. Eventually, sitting there with our fingers resting lightly on a piece of wood that refused to move, we tried pushing it around randomly ourselves just to see what would happen. It felt pretty awkward, to say the least. Funny how the ghosts always seem to go quiet the second skeptics pull up a chair.

Here is footage and photos from the Ouija class session and our follow-up testing:

Our Open Test Criteria

Science is all about repeatability. Even though our original partners backed out, this test protocol remains open to any ghost hunters, mediums, or paranormal investigators who want to prove their claims in a clean, objective setting:

How We Control for the Ideomotor Effect

The scientific reason Ouija boards "work" is the ideomotor effect—unconscious muscle movements made by the players. Here is how our test rules out trickery and unconscious pushing:

Step-by-Step Testing Process

  1. Pre-Test Inspection: Participants complete interviews, If the tester insist on using their own board we will inspect the board to make sure there are no hidden magnets, grooves, or tricks.
  2. Camera Setup: An overhead camera streams the board to the external monitor while a second camera records all participants to ensure blindfolds stay on.
  3. Isolation Check: The scribe and spectators are moved to a separate room, turn in their phones, and are checked for hidden communication devices.
  4. The Test Run: Participants do any opening rituals they like before slipping on their blindfolds. Once confirmed, the board is spun, blindfold placement is confirmed, and the session begins.
  5. Video Review: As soon as the test finishes, video files are copied and handed directly to the participants so everyone can review the evidence together.
